Bio
You hear a rustle in the reeds. Your heart stops. There is a bestial roar, a flurry of black and orange, and all at once something is upon you. Its fangs are sharp, but its fur is warm. Teeth and claws, snuggles and purrs. What is this curious embrace? Are you being mauled to death, or hugged to life? Only the telltale beat of the tiger's heart can answer this for you.
Toby the Tiger, born and raised right here in Boise, is the music project of Brock Ross, Dallin Christensen, and Joss Wilson. Their debut album, Demapper, features a wide range of sounds and influences, all orbiting the nucleus of early-2000s guitar-driven indie rock. The music is in turns feisty and florid, then gently introspective. Poppy melody lines float above growling guitars; a lush synth licks the wounds of a sadly fingerpicked acoustic ballad. Poetic and painfully relatable, the band's lyrics map a course through the tumultuous sea of early adulthood--the broken illusions, the crumbling faith, the existential dread, the sneaking suspicion that "meaning" might be manufactured, and the stories we tell ourselves to try to make it make sense. And, throughout the album's entire sprawling sonic tapestry, there is woven an unbroken golden thread: defiant joy.
Fans of the following bands will be delighted to find their influence in TTT's music: Manchester Orchestra, Pedro the Lion (to whom Toby the Tiger's name pays homage), Kevin Devine, Pinback, mid-2000s Incubus. If you like music with big guitars, catchy hooks, thoughtful lyrics, and a bit of drama, then you'll love Toby the Tiger.
